Discussion Questions for Galileo’s Letter to the Grand Duchess 1. Overall, what is Galileo’s attitude toward the church? a. He depicts himself as a devout and loyal subject of the Church. He doesn’t claim that the Church itself is opposed to his beliefs, but that certain misguided theologians and academics were using the power of the Church to oppose him. 2. Do you think he was trying to bring the church in line with science or science in line with church? a. The church in line with science. 3. What are his attitudes toward those who he feels are using the bible to support arguments against him? a. Galileo feels that they are â€Å"Showing greater fondness for their own opinions than for the truth†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (30). He feels they are misinterpreting the bible purposefully to hereticize his ideas. 4.
